When it comes to #SoloRPG play, it seems most people either play dedicated solo games like #IronSworn or #4AD, or they're playing some rules-light yet traditional #TTRPG like some #OSR variant.

Meanwhile, I'm over here playing #PathFinder2e solo. Granted, I only play with one PC. If I had a full party, I'd probably go with something lighter. I do enjoy the occasional #FourAgainstDarkness game.

I am so glad it is not just me! 😅

I recently got interested in solo rpgs and read a few rule books, among them "Four Against Darkness". And at least for the moment, I completely bounced off of it, due to the "structure" (lack thereof) and contradictions in the rules.

But I am still interested in it, and will try it out at least once at some point!

Vendredi aprÚs-midi, je me suis replongé dans Four Against Darkness

Did some #FourAgainstDarkness last night. First proper play through after learning the rules.

Finally got to play a "game" of #FourAgainstDarkness on my graph paper notebook, it was fun! It took me around 2 hours to finish this dungeon, having the room generation rolls in the middle of the book and the rolls for what happens after entering the rooms in the back is very impractical, I wasted some time flipping pages but what are you gonna do. I didn't make too many mistakes either this time, although I rolled on the vermin table instead of the minions one a couple of times, oops.

Finally got to play my first #FourAgainstDarkness game, what a mess, I forgot to add defense bonuses for shield and armor but still managed to get out of the dungeon with most of the party alive — only the rogue died. Being a stickler I started from scratch trying to better follow the rules for the next game, the results? I failed to save versus a Medusa's gaze and my whole party perished...

Here's the 2nd dungeon, I didn't have graph paper so I draw my dungeon using a website ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One thing that I've been thinking about including in my #FourAgainstDarkness #SoloRPG supplement is a personality and love/relationships system for PCs and NPCs. A system where, as your PCs interact more and more with NPCs, you get to know their personality. This means that aspects of their personality are randomized at the table as you interact with them, then made permanent. Perhaps they'll end up being compatible with your PCs, or perhaps it wasn't meant to be?

I'm facing an interesting challenge with this project. I want my #FourAgainstDarkness sandbox generator supplement to have something... unique. Something which makes it special. But I'm not yet sure what that would be. I have procedures for generating hexmaps and settlements now. One option could be to also have a subhex map generator for a more zoomed in view, like an outdoor dungeon if you will. We'll see. I'll probably do that, but I feel like I also need something more.

Despite its apparent simplicity, #FourAgainstDarkness continues to intrigue me. Now, I'm writing rules I call #FourAgainstTheSandbox which allows for overland #HexMap generation as you explore. I also want to write rules for generating settlements that you can find or build yourself as a management and worker placement minigame. Basically, I want simple rules that allows for the creation of an entire sandbox with landscapes, settlements, and dungeons.
