I learned a shocking statistic today. Foodstuffs (major supermarket chain) trucks drive the equivalent of 5 times around the planet every week shifting groceries around the South Island 😱

This information comes from Our Food Network, an Ōtepoti organisation focused on healthy and resilient food systems.

Of course if you add in the rest of Aotearoa and the other big supermarket chain it’s even worse.

Our industrial food system is so unsustainable, not to mention lacking resilience. I recall a couple of times when Ōtepoti was shut off from Ōtautahi due to floods, earthquakes etc and supermarkets quickly ran out of basics like bread, because it wasn’t produced locally. And local produce sometimes gets trucked north before being returned here (like our mail). 🤦🏻‍♀️

#Waltham residents! On very short notice, the city council has voted to cut Waltham Fields Community Farms in half, destroying the farm's ability to provide food. Please ask the city council to not ratify this, or at least table it for a month—*before 12/27*! Copy of email: https://lab.brainonfire.net/tmp/delete-after/20241231/wfcf-split-threat.html WFCF has been producing thousands of pounds of food to local communities each year, and has a mission of supplying food for free as much as possible. Please act quickly! (And boost and email, too!)
