Didn't expect to enjoy this one as much as I did, glad I went out of my comfort zone!

I went in expecting more of a folk horror story, and was surprised by how much it leaned into historical fiction and romance, but I’m not super disappointed by that.

I also found the pacing to be really effective. It raised questions at just the right moments to keep me reading, answering some while introducing new ones, rinse and repeat.

The Town Among The Tress (Greg Sorin)

They made eye contact, then she winked at him as she slipped her thin dress down from her shoulder. He  realized that all of the women were undressing. Soon they seemed to race by, nude and laughing  with abandon. The men watched, captivated. Some clapped. Others simply ogled. Matt wondered  if this were some forest ritual that would turn into an orgy. He couldn’t remember where, but he was sure he’d read stories like that taking place somewhere.

Sooooo for the first time I get to say: HEY! I have something eligible for this year's British Fantasy Awards! I'm even shameless enough to put a little video of me reading part of the story at the anthology's launch on the social graphic, which must be worth a vote, surely?

And now I feel like it's Oscars season and I'm a Hollywood studio, so I'll fade back into the shadows...

Devil's Day by Andrew Michael Hurley, published in 2017.

I loved Devil's Day, Hurley's second novel, as much as his first, The Loney. He moves the setting from the bleak Lancashire coast to a bleak fictional valley at the top of the River Ribble watershed in the Forest of Bowland, based on the Langden Valley. The folk horror theme is maintained with beautiful prose evoking the beauty and cruelty of nature and a detailed history of the valley, farms, and village at the foot of the moors, Underclough.

"Un choosing a female protagonist—an outsider to its mysteries in every way—the film emphasizes the ways in which patriarchal traditions can convince men—even ostensibly powerful men—that they and their sons are disposable. Their desire to help and care for others is twisted into an embrace of their own disposability." https://culturalgutter.com/2026/04/09/i-would-save-and-i-would-be-saved-gender-masculinity-and-a-sensible-heroine-in-ieye-of-the-devil-i/ #movies #FolkHorror

Though she bounced into the horror scene through YA, disabled Wales-based author Dawn Kurtagich is well and truly making her name in the psychological gothic these days. With her latest, The Seventh Sister, marking a foray into folk horror, she talks us through her process.
