I've just got my first Raspberry Pi (zero 2 w)!
I'm excited to learn about Linux with it (I'm a complete novice), and more about how computers work in general. Any tips on what to start with?
Coincidentally a foldscope also arrived and I think there must be a fun way to combine the two...if I get advanced enough...
Teenage kicks with foldscope.com.
My daughter's latest imaging adventure. Emoji-prize for anyone who can guess what this is.

Thanks! Good to hear from someone who has used one! 😁
The article mentioned field research:
"And it's not just for amateurs. Some 1,400 research papers have referenced the Foldscope.
Karthik Balasubramaniam, a scientist at the Agharkar Research Institute at Pune, says the Foldscope has helped make his fieldwork easier. He studies a microscopic kind of algae, collecting water samples from across the country to assess biodiversity and pollution."
And if you want to buy your own Foldscope, you can! Sounds like a fun gift!
There are different kits available and kits for classrooms.
The web site lists some holiday discounts (until Dec. 18)

Foldscopes have apparently been around for a while but I'd never heard of them before. I love the origin story:
"The inspiration came when Prakash, 44, was growing up in the northern Indian city of Meerut.
…
'We were asked to draw a microscope,' he says. 'None of us could because we just hadn't seen one.' "
Such a great story! 😍
"Fold paper. Insert lens. This $2 microscope changes how kids see the world"

"Once assembled the Foldscope is the size of a bookmark. It’s small enough to fit in a pocket and can magnify up to 140 times.
Each unit costs around $2 to make. Foldscopes are offered for free to kids in lower income countries; various upgraded models with extras are sold as well, earning money for the charitable endeavor."
Very cool!!

Question: How do plants defy gravity? Vascular plants have the ability to pull water from the ground and up to the leafy canopy against the force of gravity. For example, a 70 foot tall red oak tree absorbs about 100 gallons of water per day and pulls it up at a rate of 92 ft/hr! Let's learn more about the structures i
