Its all very well having 734 planned infrastructure projects in the pipeline with a total budget of over £700bn, but if they don't actually get under way then this is just more declaratory politics;

You can declare you're going to invest in infrastructure, and then you can amend your fiscal rules to allow that sort if investment not to undermine the fiscal position.... but actually, the project *do* need to get under way!

At the moment, way too few do!

"Last year #Reeves increased #taxes but did not formulate a narrative or strategy, nor did she give us a sense of where next. This autumn I fear she will need to raise taxes again, but in doing so she needs also to provide that narrative and come out all guns blazing against the unserious — on her own benches and beyond."

@sjwrenlewis long after QE, why is the BoE still paying so much interest on central bank reserves?

Rachel Reeves could actually take a lesson from Reform's proposals to cut these payments to banks. She could instead fund more investment, without more taxes. Apparently the ECB and BoJ do this, even Ted Cruz in the US now wants the Fed to do something similar.

"#Reeves inherited a far weaker #economy than #Brown, but its weakness represents supply side stagnation rather than deficient demand. Overall, if Reeves is following anyone it is #Labour’s most accomplished #Chancellor, while any obsession about following rules on her part can unfortunately be laid at the door of #LizTruss."
