But also just finished watching that Pendatang movie - they've decided to completely release it on yt instead of going via theatrical distro.

A little writeup about the movie, which is apparently doing really well in terms of viewer count: https://says.com/my/entertainment/its-story-about-unity-malaysia-crowdfunded-film-pendatang-rave-reviews -
>The film follows a Cantonese-speaking family forced to relocate to a kampung house due to a Segregation Act that divides Malaysians of different races into designated areas.

>Discontented with the strict surveillance imposed by the Chinese-run militia, the family faces more challenges when they discover a Malay girl hiding in the attic.

Good news: Hungry Ghost Diner is still playing up to this coming Wednesday on limited screens

Bad news: all showings are at daytime because it's Hungry Ghost month. 🙄

If only it's also Ramadhan at the same time then we can reassure each other haih.

Update on the above movie: the supposed gossip is that the theatres didn't think anyone would be watching this when Hungry Ghost season starts (then ... Why.... Schedule it... Like this?) But it will be functionally gone from the screens - at best you'll get one or two shows in the day in a handful of screens in Klang Valley so give Hungry Ghost Diner a go while you can.

Re: last boost - If you're in #Malaysia please do give it a watch. Last day tomorrow in the major chains, I just found out (and it only came out on the 10th - our local theatres don't actually care about incubating local films). I was gonna save it for the weekend and did think the trailer switched a lot of registers, but friends who have watched said that it's genuinely good. So please go, if you can.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/CkyZIELinX0

Synopsis: Hungry Ghost Diner explores the heartfelt meaning behind the Hungry Ghost Festival through the eyes of its intrepid protagonist Bonnie Lam who discovers that her family’s coffee shop is haunted by ghosts of her dead relatives returning for the annual Ghost Festival at rural Behrang Stesen, Perak.

So there's a Malaysian movie literally just titled Air Force: The Movie, but it actually came out around the same time as Top Gun: Maverick, so it gets the dubious honour of not piggybacking off of TGM because it got banned in their home country (China's Born to Fly, with Wang Yibo) or because there's not a movie they won't do a cover of, for the right vibes (India's Fighter which is otw, with Hrithik Roshan). I know the Malaysian one is more of a "I'm just happy to be here" in the grouping I'm thinking of, but hey film video essayists, here's a pitch...

Actually, any Asia-side movies of this nature from the last 2 years that I should know about?

Hopefully I'll remember to watch this when it comes out in August, and mainly because I'm curious about where the budget will be spent. Should I be concerned that the fight sequences looked it it was staged the same way as the MidEast portion of Fenomena? The other curiosity is to watch the jingoism from the other direction, since this purports to tell the #Malaysia‍n pov of the mission in Somalia that became the movie Black Hawk Down: https://youtu.be/et2viNOwRrE

TL;DR tht movie underplayed the rescue effort from the UN Peacekeepers which was then made up of the #Pakistan‍i and Malaysian battalions - the Pakistanis had to retreat but the Malaysians stayed with the US forces to get the downed men out. I never kept up past the initial flurry of official grousing when the movie came out but apparently around 10 years ago much of it was properly declassified or at least talked abt publicly, based on my impression from this vid: https://youtu.be/KacVH0pDgsI

In local movie distribution bullshit, I can't even rewatch Rajah anymore, it's done the bare minimum run in Klang Valley and now GSC is only screening it in Sarawak.

One day I'm going to have the wherewithal to watch Mat Kilau just so I can properly have feelings about it in the context of (ethno)nationalist freedom fighter fantasies eg RRR except then I might have to check myself to a sanitarium and I just don't think I have enough leave days available.
