(2/5) And my favourite quotes, after thrashing the little car around Northumberland: “the Midas hangs on like a gibbon in a hurricane” and “Kit-car origins or not, this car competes.”
I took the mag home to show Beth. She was not impressed. “It’s got a nice face but a big arse”. This would take more work…
A war of attrition began, which involved daily showing her the article and lamenting the imminent demise of the #Fiat127.

(3/5) There were several bends that the 127 encouraged you to attack in a ‘drop it down to second and red-line it’ sort of way. I was younger then…
Coming home one evening, I threw the car into a left-right double bend and immediately saw a Police Slow sign. I jumped off the gas and changed to third, rounding the curve to see a police officer facing me in the middle of road. A full-on stop drew us to a halt about a yard short.

(1/5) As the #Alfasud wheezed and steamed to its demise in the forecourt of a car dealer near Farnham on the A31, I wandered around their showroom, most of it way above my budget.
But sitting gleaming on one side was something Italian, sporty, economical and eye-searing: a 1982 #Fiat 127 Sport, delivery mileage only, for the princely sum of £3850. Like this (one of only three left in the UK) but probably not as well put-together.
