(3/5) A fire at the #MidasCars factory meant that we had no hood, stereo or door cards for 7 weeks, but they were the driest, warmest weeks for years and soon we headed with a bootful of luggage to Corby, where the first two were fitted and we left in the direction of Scotland. Apart from one windscreen wiper failure, she ran flawlessly but we aborted the holiday a day early due to monsoon conditions.

(4/5) Harold burbled out of the industrial estate onto an urban dual-carriageway. “Shall we have some fun?” Beans. There is a roundabout near the site of the Corby factory, legendary in Midas test drive circles. We approached it at an indicated 80-ish mph in the right-hand lane, probably 70mph actual. Not yet calibrated to the car, my brain thought it might be possible to straight-line it at that speed. Then he indicated right.

(2/5) And my favourite quotes, after thrashing the little car around Northumberland: “the Midas hangs on like a gibbon in a hurricane” and “Kit-car origins or not, this car competes.”

And as a bonus, our 'new' old girl: 1989 Midas Gold Convertible, 1380cc A-series, 135000 miles, owned (and built) from new. Think it might be a keeper...

The picture was taken on the day of her 21st birthday on a grand tour we took to celebrate.

As an eco benefit she hoovers up plenty of old Metro bits that would otherwise go to landfill and returns large numbers of smiles per gallon.
