I think most people who have worked in corporations as a technical person has met the stereotypical sales guy. He's the guy that will promise the customer anything to get a contract signed and then complain, brow beat, and throw tantrums blaming the technical folks for informing them that they sold something that doesn't exist, can't possibly be delivered on time and budget promised, and might not even be possible.
Never mind all that. The C types on C $. So basically it becomes a fire drill to see if it can come close enough to not lose the contract and get sued.
Sometimes, with burnt out employees and a list of technica debt as long as the salesman's list of lies, the actually intelligent people will manage to deliver and save the day. That one success is enough to burnish the reputation the liar claims as his own declaring himself just ahead of the market instead of just being a common liar.
Usually he, or she in the case of Theranos, but still, almost always he, is not a liar. No, he is a futurist. He invented the albatross and hung it on the neck of talented people who said it couldn't or shouldn't be done and for that, he declares himself an indispensable genius.
This pattern then becomes entrenched as anyone willing to listen to him bost becomes entranced thinking he really can do anything. And so he keeps trying to one up his last lie with a stream of wreckage in his wake always hopping off the bombs in time to blame the people he drove into the ground trying to build a plain in flight.
That is the pattern of Elon laid bare in this article about his boring lies.

It is who he is. The jerk sales guy that chums and bros people into believing he has talent outside of impressing people who want to believe him. That is all he is. Well, that and a guy who started life with a fortune and disdain for workers born out of his parents south african mining venture that made big $ with near forced labor under appartheid.
He moved to america when Apartheid was ended. Maybe our racism and disdain for labor felt like home? Or maybe this is just where he found his mark.
