Been a fan of PCC streetcars since I was a kid. Props the Market Street Railway for keeping them running along the #FMarket.

My sketch in pencil, ink, gel pen, watercolor and gouache.

F Market (original watercolor) — ART OF THE OUTER AVENUES

The Market Street Railway keeps vintage streetcars from San Francisco and all over the world running on the F Market line. This PCC, in traditional green-and-white Muni livery, dates from the 1940s or 50s. Original sketch in pencil, ink, gel pen, watercolor and gouache on paper. 9"x12”

ART OF THE OUTER AVENUES
For #FMarket riders who need level boarding, eg people with wheelchairs or strollers, it’s high friction. First, they have to get on the ramp/lift at the far side of the boarding island (not every stop has one). Then they have to catch the operator’s attention, because the streetcar can’t back up if it rolls past to the main boarding point, a common occurrence. Then the operator has to get up and manually deploy and put away a metal ramp, which takes 1-2 minutes per on/offboard.

The #FMarket streetcar is technically ADA accessible, but it’s a worse accessibility experience than a modern low floor bus.
Standard boarding involves several stairs, which has a lot of people with limited mobility going slow. The F really makes me appreciate the “kneeling” bus design in contrast: operators regularly and quickly dip the front corner of the bus to be more level with the curb.
