Five Tiers of RPG Publishing

Hasbro’s annual earnings came out this week, so I took a look. It is truly staggering how much Wizards of the Coast has changed the company since they were acquired; when looking at unadjusted earnings the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Games division was the only one that turned a profit in the entire company. Not only that, but Wizards is responsible for roughly 47% of the entire company’s revenue and over 90% of all revenue growth over the last year. That’s over 2 billion dollars in revenue; roughly $1.7 billion is attributable to Magic: The Gathering and the rest is attributable to Dungeons and Dragons. Dungeons and Dragons is obviously the largest, most popular roleplaying game, but $400 million in revenue is staggering. If this was all books, it would be eight million copies. It’s not all books of course; one of the reasons D&D is growing (though perhaps not as fast as Magic is) is the continued expansion of digital services like D&D Beyond, products with high margins and minimal variable costs. This is the future, not because it makes for a better gaming experience, but because it makes for a better balance sheet. […]

We slice into "Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts," the first official expansion for the award-winning dark fantasy tabletop RPG from Evil Hat Productions and John Harper. https://ttrpgfans.com/blades-in-the-dark-deep-cuts/ #BladesInTheDark #forgedinthedark #evilhat #Doskvol #ttrpg #RPG

You want to talk customer service? #evilhat (@evilhat) wins.

I only play physical board games because I get enough screen time. One of my favourites is Dresden FIles Coop Card game. Expansion 6 released on digital but there was some question whether we'd see it in physical. I had sent emails long ago asking for it.

Yesterday it was released on #drivethrurpg with a physical option. Not 10 minutes later, I got an email from Evil Hat directly telling me about it. Amazing!

@evilhat cancelling Tomb Raider RPG and deciding to repurpose the mechanics in a non-licensed setting sounds like the best possible outcome, honestly. I was curious before but I am especially excited now.

#BundleOfHolding has a quick deal (only 7 days) up for #ApocalypseKeys from #EvilHat, a #PbtA game that is inspired by monsters fighting monsters (Hellboy, Doom Patrol).

This is yet another Kickstarter I backed and haven't had time to chew on, but I loved the idea of and $10 is a sweet deal for anyone curious.

Apocalypse Keys Quick Deal

Even the most powerful monsters have hearts. Unleash your destruction and reveal your deepest emotions in the Apocalypse Keys tabletop roleplaying game from Evil Hat Productions. The Doomsday Clock is ticking down, and emotions run high as you and your team of DIVISION agents struggle to find the Keys before the villainous Harbingers unlock the Doors of Power and bring about the apocalypse. As an Omen-class monster, you wield formidable power, but society shuns and fears you. And so you work covertly through DIVISION, a secret organization that battles occult threats and delays the impending apocalypse. DIVISION not only tries to save the world; it also offers kinship with other monsters like yourself. These relationships stave off the darkness growing within you – darkness that can turn you into the very thing you're fighting against, a Harbinger.

Been running a #faterpg game on #roll20. I like the idea of using a deck of cards to track Fate Points. Unfortunately, the official fate token art from the #evilhat site has white text, and roll20 puts a big white number on top of it, making an unreadable mess. So I made a version with dark text.

Picked up the FATE Accessibility Toolkit book.

I’m not personally looking to play disabled characters in FATE, but I am interested in accessibility in gaming and this was an illuminating read in that context.

There is a lot of overlap in making your RPG sessions accessible and designing other games to be accessible, and this book had a lot of interesting content in that vein.

Nice job Evil Hat.

More ESPionage NPC illustrations coming in! Here's Noah Twain, an antagonist from the adventure Sunny Days and Rain. Noah's the handyman of Paradise Round. It's a big job and he doesn’t have time to turn around to face you. #TTRPG #FateRPG
