@JewishConversations @philosophy I enjoyed your thoughts. Thanks for writing it! I've got a comment on the usage of the word #epistemology when saying that everyone implicitly has it. Wouldn't it be better to use #epistemologicalFrameworks or #epistemicSystems in this context? I feel that epistemology IS already a philosophical theory and a kind of philosophical analysis, so it implies having some reflection on the part of the agent.

Barack Obama's address on internet disinformation

I've seen multiple reports and articles in recent days on Obama's recent addresses on this topic --- at the University of Chicago and, linked here, Stanford University (2022-04-21).

I've not been able to find a transcript of the actual speech.

C-SPAN however has the actual video:

This is the video of former US president Barack Obama at Stanford University on the matter of online disinformation. The speech was given on 21 April 2022.

Obama's remarks begin at about 9m50s.

Former President Obama Warns of Threat of Disinformation to Democracy

Former President Barack Obama said "people are dying" due to disinformation on social media, pointing to the COVID-19 pandemic, as he delivered remarks at Stanford University on the threats posed by disinformation. He spoke on the importance of free speech and the First Amendment, saying they can produce a healthier society, but that, "the First Amendment is a check on the power of the state. It doesn't apply to private companies like Facebook or Twitter, any more than it applies to editorial decisions made by The New York Times or Fox News. It never has." President Obama also addressed disinformation associated with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the repeated denial of the legitimacy of the 2020 election results by many Republicans.

When epistemic systems gain social and political significance (2017)

Our present epistemic systems are undergoing kind of the same shock that the online community underwent when transitioning from BBSs and Usenet to the commercial web to social media.

We were used to a very high content-to-BS ratio because it took a certain amount of intelligence and intense domain-interest for people to be there in the first place -- and we've now transitioned to a situation where many people are there more or less accidentally and (the worst part), because of a high percentage of the population being present, there is now substantial power to be had by influencing the discussions that take place.

@vortex_egg The first person who clearly pinpointed that for me was @woozle (UberWensch of toot.cat), in what I call Woozle's Epistemic Paradox:

Because of a high percentage of the population being present, there is now substantial power to be had by influencing the discussions that take place.

(More at the source, from about 4 years ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/dredmorbius/comments/5wg0hp/when_epistemic_systems_gain_social_and_political/)

She's not the first person to realise this, of course, and it's not the neatest phrasing, but it's a reframing to the present reality.

You can find this in Sun Tzu (notably in the Use of Spies section), and a whole mess of media theory.

But yeah, the epistemic system has been openly subverted. Largely as a full frontal attack on trust.

@zensaiyuki There's a few points on #AI, #power, and #disinhibition that are at play here, as well as of the absolute requirement of #epistemicSystems, that is, #Truth and #TruthModeling systems, to be completely free of bias.

I'm going to go on for a bit here, warning / #tootstorm

First off is the notion that AI itself is a...different, if not entirely new...sort of knowledge. It's one that yeilds *decisionmaking* power but *without explanatory power*.

AI gives "what" but not "why".
