England’s Undeserved Point

A look back at the England Women’s cricket team’s luckiest ever day, escaping with a point from a match in which they were utterly outplayed, and a lot of photographs.

@_hypocaust Absolutely. I have been thinking of other lucky escapes. In ODI terms there is Pakistan against England in the 1992 men's world cup - Pakistan 74 all out and then it rained. The overall champions are probably Northamptonshire, from a game against Gloucestershire in 1907 - Gloucs 60 and 88, Northants 12 and 40-7 when the rain made its final intervention.

Match abandoned due to rain, meaning that England take as undeserved a point as you will ever see, since there is no result.

The rain has returned, which may give England one of the most undeserved escapes in cricket history (it would be a big claim to say most undeserved - e.g. Gloucestershire v Northamptonshire in 1907 - Gloucestershire 60 and 88, Northamptonshire 12 and 40-7 when the rain made its final intervention)

Pakistan's target has been revised down to 113 - punishment for England for having lost seven wickets before the rain came, which means that the reduction in overs is not considered to have cost them as many runs as it would had they more wickets in hand.

England end their reduced allocation of 31 overs on 133-9, which means they have scored 54-2 in the six overs since the resumption after the long rain break. The total will be DLS adjusted, so we don't know exactly what Pakistan are going to be chasing yet.

Covers coming on with England 79-7 after 25 overs. There is generous scope for interruptions, but the rain in Sri Lanka can be exceedingly heavy. England will be hoping for something positively Noachian as that is the only way they are getting anything from this one. Pakistan will be hoping it eases off in time for resumption.

Capsey goes for the sweep, misses, is hit on the pad and given LBW. She sends it upstairs in desperation. No bat involved, so on to ball tracking. Replay shows it to be plumb, which in fairness Capsey didn't really doubt, it was a review born of desperation. England 78-7, Capsey gone for 16 (43), Rameen Shamim the wicket taker. Em Arlott, playing her first innings of the tournament, joins Charlie Dean.

LBW appeal against Dunkley is turned down on field, and sent upstairs by Pakistan. No bat involved, and it is smashing into off stump. Dunkley gone for 11 (21), second scalp for Sadia Iqbal and England are 57-6 in the 12th over and in deep trouble. Charlie Dean is a useful lower order batter, and none of Arlott, Glenn or Smith can be labelled rabbits.
