La principessa del Galles Kate Middleton è arrivata a Reggio Emilia per il suo primo viaggio all’estero dal 2024, quando le era stato diagnosticato il cancro che l’ha tenuta lontana dagli impegni pubblici per mesi. La missione che la porta nella città emiliana è densa di significato per lei, per la Corona e per l’Italia. Una folla sconfinata di persone si è accampata cercando di guadagnare i posti migliori dai quale scorgere Kate, chiamandola, emozionata e cerando il suo sorriso. Mani alzate e cellulari spianati nella piazza principale, davanti all’entrata del comune dove il sindaco e le istituzioni l’hanno ricevuta per portarle il saluto della comunità che aspettava la “sua” Kate con ansia. Tra la folla capannelli di fan agghindati per l’occasione e bandiere britanniche che sventolano nella città del Tricolore.
Quella stessa onorificenza, il Primo Tricolore, che il sindaco oggi le conferisce per il suo impegno per l’infanzia. La fondazione che ha voluto fondare nel 2021, oggi l’ha portata in Italia con l’obiettivo di studiare una eccellenza formativa e caricandosi l’onore di risollevare le sventurate sorti di una monarchia alle prese con scandali e problemi famigliari da far dimenticare. In tailleur azzurro semplicissimo e camicia bianca, la principessa è stata salutata dai bambini delle classi di 5 anni delle scuole d’infanzia Robinson e Diana, asili storici del sistema Reggio Children. Lei ha anche trovato il tempo per abbracciare una ragazza disabile, Elizabeth Spencer, 24 anni, nata a Londra ma residente a Berlino e venuta davanti al duomo per poterla vedere da vicino. “Le ho scritto una lettera e gliel’ho consegnata oggi. È un sogno che si avvera”, ha poi raccontato la ragazza.
Dopo la parte istituzionale, è la volta delle visite alle scuole che praticano il Reggio Emilia Approach. Il classico erbazzone, la torta di riso, succhi di frutta e acqua profumata aspettano Kate in un buffet preparato per accoglierla con il gusto emiliano nel centro internazionale Loris Malaguzzi.

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton arrived in Reggio Emilia for her first foreign trip since 2024, when she was diagnosed with cancer and remained away from public engagements for months. The mission that brings her to the Emilia-Romagna city is full of meaning for her, the Crown, and Italy. An endless crowd of people had set up camp trying to secure the best spots to see Kate, calling her, moved and seeking her smile. Raised hands and smartphones spread out in the main square, in front of the entrance to the town hall where the mayor and institutions received her to bring her the greetings of the community eagerly awaiting “her” Kate. Among the crowds, fan groups dressed for the occasion and British flags waving in the city of the Tricolore.
That same honor, the First Tricolore, which the mayor today confers upon her for her commitment to childhood. The foundation that she wanted to establish in 2021, has now brought her to Italy with the goal of studying an educational excellence and shouldering the honor of reviving the unfortunate fate of a monarchy grappling with scandals and family problems to forget. In a simple blue suit and white shirt, the princess was greeted by the children of the 5-year-old classes of the Robinson and Diana kindergartens, historic asylums of the Reggio Children system. She also found the time to embrace a disabled girl, Elizabeth Spencer, 24 years old, born in London but resident in Berlin and who had come before the cathedral to see her up close. “I wrote her a letter and delivered it to her today. It’s a dream come true,” the girl later recounted.
After the official part, it’s time for visits to schools that practice the Reggio Emilia Approach. The classic Erbazzone, rice cake, fruit juices and scented water awaits Kate in a buffet prepared to welcome her with the taste of Emilia-Romagna in the international Loris Malaguzzi center.
