Elizabeth Moon: Once a Hero

Tämä kirja on suosikkini Moonin Serrano-sarjassa; juuri sopivaa eskapismia harmaan loska-talven keskelle. Serrano-sarja sijoittuu kaukaiseen tulevaisuuteen, ja sen tärkeimmät päähenkilöt ovat sotilasuran valinneita naisia. Sarjassa on mielestäni onnistuttu yhdistämään uskottavat henkilöhahmot "realistiselta tuntuvaan" avaruussotimiseen - usein jompikumpi puoli sakkaa, mutta Serrano-sarjassa ei. Pidän myös saman tekijän Vatta-sarjasta.

I recently finished reading "The Deed of Paksenarrion", a fantasy trilogy by Elizabeth Moon published in 1988.

It's a perfectly fine fantasy yarn, filled with tropes but still engaging and a satisfying read. Here's some things I found noteworthy:

Ok, so the story goes that #ElizabethMoon once overheard a game of #DND and was so offended by the memetic #LawfulStupid paladin in that game that she set out to write #TheDeedOfPaksennarrion to show how a Paladin should interact with their God, and what the role of paladin really means. For all that it’s something of a mid show, #TheFarawayPaladin is at least trying to cover that aspect seriously.

OK, so #TheFarawayPaladin was never a great show but it was solid and the return was in the same vein so I’m happy enough with the S2 opener. There is one sense, an anecdote about #ElizabethMoon writing #TheDeedofPaksenarrion that reminds me of The Faraway Paladin.
