Seattle arrests 31 violent protesters from the Progressive Left while inducing legal action from protesters from the Religious Right
Two recent incidents in Seattle highlight the city's ongoing struggles with managing protests and balancing free speech with public safety that have now garnered the attention of the FBI.
On May 24, Mayday USA held a permitted #DontMessWithOurKids" rally in Seattle's Cal Anderson Park, a site notable for the 2020 CHAZ/CHOP movement. The family-friendly event featured religious music and activities, drawing large counter-protest crowds under the banner "Keep Your Bible Off Our Bodies." Counter-protesters became hostile toward event attendees and confrontational with Seattle Police, leading to the arrest of twenty-three individuals. Washington State Troopers were called in for mutual aid as tensions escalated.
The day after the rally, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell labeled it a "far-right" event intended to “provoke a reaction by promoting beliefs that are inherently opposed to our city’s values, in the heart of Seattle’s most prominent [LGBT] neighborhood.” He suggested that Mayday USA chose the location to induce a riot, although his staff had recommended Cal Anderson Park as a suitable venue. Harrell announced a review of policies allowing such religious events in the future. The Deputy Director of the FBI, Dan Bongino, posted on X.com directing his team to investigate allegations of targeted violence against the religious group and emphasizing that "Freedom of religion isn’t a suggestion".
The mayor’s reaction inspired the Mayday USA group, also promoted locally by Former WA State Representative Matt Shea, to call for a protest outside Seattle City Hall on Tuesday, May 27, to call for the mayor’s resignation. This event was also met by counter protesters from the left, 8 of which were arrested by local Police for unruly conduct and violence.
