WOODWORK & COOKERY
MANUAL TRAINING IN SCHOOLS
“In regard to manual training, it is proper to note the growth of the work since the first two manual centres were established in Wellington 17 years ago, with a staff of two,” states the annual report of the chairman of the Education Board, Mr. T. Forsyth, to the Minister of Education. “At that period 400 boys received instruction in #woodwork and #drawing, and 400 girls instruction in #cookery and domestic science. Last year lessons in these subjects were given at thirteen centres by twelve fully-qualified specialist teachers, and, approximately, 4400 scholars from 98 primary and nine secondary classes received instruction. The centres are well equipped, and the reports from the inspector of manual training are very satisfactory. In the near future it is hoped to establish an additional centre in the vicinity of Lyall Bay.…”
