STOP Dog Meat Trade In The Philippines

We are calling on the Philippine government to enforce legislation to ban the farming, slaughter, and consumption of dogs. Dog slaughter for consumption was banned in the Philippines in 1982. This ban was reinforced in 1998 via the Animal Welfare Act which prohibits killing dogs for food with minimum penalties set at 1,000 pesos (equivalent to about US$22 at the time) and not less than six months in prison. The 2007 Anti-Rabies Act, passed in 2007, increased the severity of punishment with minimum fines of 5,000 pesos per dog and not less than one year of imprisonment for participating in the trading of dogs for their meat. Laws mean little if they are not enforced. The government of the Philippines has continually done little to protect dogs, enforce the law and bring an end to this horrific and illicit trade. Moreover there is a loophole which states ‘with exemptions for dogs and cats killed and eaten as part of indigenous rituals.’ Animal rights group, 'Say No To Dog Meat' has evidence that shows "ritualistic slaughter festivals" involving the killing of dogs and cats, where to date a staggering 50,000+ dogs and some 20,000+ cats are said to be killed just in the Philippines alone. In 2019, 'Network for Animals' filmed undercover at two restaurants, and a restaurant patron was photographed eating barbecued dog. Metro Manila Animal Save, a chapter of Animal Save Movement, was started in 2018. The group has held vigils at pig and water buffalo slaughterhouses in the cities of Manila, San Juan, Pasay, Pasig, and Baguio. Following a pause in activities due to the pandemic, Metro Manila Animal Save is continuing its work to help end animal agriculture and other forms of animal cruelty and exploitation, including the dog meat trade. “It is my responsibility as an activist to bring light to these dark places and to offer hope and comfort to the beings in their dying moments.” - Edison Yu Dogs are Individuals Dogs are intelligent and are regarded as family by many people. They are loyal, loving and have a long history as companion animals for humans. Dog Meat Trade Cruelty Dogs captured for the meat trade are often injured during transport, suffer dehydration and exhaustion, and extreme terror and confusion at their betrayal by humans, before being violently killed. STOP CRUEL, DANGEROUS TRANSPORT IN SUMATRA’S DOG MEAT TRADE

A new Lady Freethinker (#LFT) investigation into the Sumatran #DogMeatTrade has documented apparently sick and emaciated #dogs with scars being transported 17 hours for #slaughter, getting yanked off a truck with a long snare pole, and then being shoved into burlap sacks that were tied shut.

So proud of my @hsiglobal colleagues in Indonesia who secured a permanent ban on dog and cat meat slaughter and trade at infamous Tomohon Extreme Market and rescued all remaining dogs and cats who are now receiving emergency veterinary care. What a team of heroes! #animalrescue #dogmeattrade

No other organisation has ever been able to achieve anything of this magnitude, and we are delighted that Soi Dog Foundation have been chosen by the Vietnamese government to collaborate on how to tackle ending the trade.

This is the beginning of the end of the barbaric and cruel consumption of dog and cats in Vietnam. 🇻🇳
