_The Evening Post_, 20 Feb 1924:
SCHOOLMASTER AND BOY
(ST TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
DUNEDIN, 19th February.
The Magistrate heard, this morning, a claim for £10 [ca. $1200 today] damages by Henry Swallow against Alexander J. Jack, headmaster of the Mosgiel School, for an unwarrantably severe flogging of plaintiff’s son. The evidence was that the boy was struck on the shoulders with a strap for alleged insubordination, one blow taking effect on his face.
The Magistrate, in awarding plaintiff £5 [ca. $600], with costs, said the master evidently became excited and did not realise the blow he struck.
