Baguioâs Gina Iniong hungry for redemption in ONE Championship
Istela Nunes, Gina IniongRepresenting Team Lakay, Gina âConvictionâ Iniong, 29, of Baguio City, Philippines is arguably the most popular female atomweight competitor in the field of womenâs mixed martial arts in the Philippines. However, she lost the luster of her distinguished billing after bowing to two of the three former world title contenders that she faced on the ONE Championship stage.
With âONE: Conquest of Championsâ in Manila, Philippines on November 23, 2018 now starting to fill its slots, Iniong is hoping to be part of the massive card. The upcoming ONE Championship event will be headlined by a lightweight championship clash between her Team Lakay comrade Eduard âLandslideâ Folayang, 34, and Amir Khan, 23, of Singapore.
Aside from the main event, the other bouts on the âONE: Conquest of Championsâ card have yet to be announced. Iniong stated, âThat is the perfect event for me to show how hungry I am to get back on the winning track, to showcase the improvements in my game and to let the rest of the division know that they canât count me out yet.â
Iniong admitted that she was outworked by Mei âV.Vâ Yamaguchi, 35, of Tokyo, Japan in their rematch at âONE: Immortal Pursuitâ on November 24, 2017 in Singapore. The Baguio City native yielded to her Japanese rival via unanimous decision.
On April 20, 2018, Iniong was able to pick up a dominant unanimous decision win over ex-world title challenger Jenny âLady GoGoâ Huang, 27, of Taiwan. But on July 7, 2018, the Team Lakay fighter headed back to the abominable losing territory as she was overwhelmed by the length and size advantage of Istela Nunes, 26, of Parana, Brazil to keep her out of range over the course of three rounds to drop another decision loss.
âI failed to show what we have trained for in those two matches against top contenders of the division,â Iniong said. âThose are definitely tough losses to take, but it is a perfect opportunity for me to learn and improve.â
With 7 wins and 4 losses, Iniong went back to the drawing board to review what went wrong in her outings against Yamaguchi and Nunes. The Team Lakay fighter is now eager to get back in action to prove to all and sundry that she is still one of the top caliber competitors in the deep atomweight division.
