The Magic Mountain and Doctor Faustus are the two books that I will take with me when I'm allowed just one book on my desert island!
And the passage where organist Wendell Kretschmar gives a public lecture (to a tiny audience) on "Why did Beethooven not write a third movement to the Piano Sonata opus 111?" is the funniest and at the same time most moving piece of writing on music ever --- Th Mann the master comedian and master assimilator.
#DoctorFaustus I really like the phrase "Dragon, quod tumeraris" despite it apparently not really meaning anything. His first incantation where he says that, he sends the devil back because it's too ugly for him to look at. Maybe the character's latin was bad and not Marlowes. He cast his spell with bad Latin and as a result got a monster. He makes Mephistopheles reappear looking like a friar.
> Thou art too ugly to attend on me.
