Compared with 1922 modernist centenaries, those from 1924 have been quieter. I am not sure if The Magic Mountain has caught on much in anglo worlds. I'll get there, but not yet, I am reading Mann backwards from the end, playing the Joseph and His Brethren exception. #ThomasMann #books #reading
Doctor Faustus is enthralling . . . its combination of the novel form (irony) with that of chronicle. If Benjamin had lived, he wd have written more surprisingly about it than Adorno did. It throws me right back to Benjamin's earliest writings from his involvement with youth movements.

this year is a detour: having started at the end (Krull), I find him intensely readable, deeply funny. Doctor Faustus incorporates a wide range of historical materials, its parodic/ironic structure allows seriousness not ponderousness. Here: an address to the time of the reader.

The Magic Mountain and Doctor Faustus are the two books that I will take with me when I'm allowed just one book on my desert island!

And the passage where organist Wendell Kretschmar gives a public lecture (to a tiny audience) on "Why did Beethooven not write a third movement to the Piano Sonata opus 111?" is the funniest and at the same time most moving piece of writing on music ever --- Th Mann the master comedian and master assimilator.
