Bruh, look what they did to my #Distrotoot

https://distrotoot.com

Visit it. Somebody please explain WTF this is.

@SuperDicq I like how you have jiyu.dev for actually posting FOSS content, while cdrom/minidisc are public instances for people to s***post on. I run my own instance too (and it's the oldest account I have) and it doesn't delete old posts unless deletion requests are sent out.

Speaking of which, you followed two accounts on distrotoot.com, derek and RetroEdgeTech, who have moved to @distrotube and @matthew, respectively.

#DistroToot was my first instance, and when it shut down I moved to starnix.network but I had my own instance at the time. DistroToot suffered a rollback, and that post was lost in the rollback, and I didn't have it archived on my instance. But RetroEdge.Tech boosted my post back in the day, so all of his followers would have my post archived. #DistroTootRefugee

Not a mockup or a joke. YouTube is now censoring videos that it deems "popular" compared to the subscriber count or creator history. This is hurting mainly small creators, and is being done to censor the #TruckerConvoy. If you get this error on your video, try downloading it with yt-dlp, a fork of youtube-dl.

@kirby:
I think YouTubes gravestone is coming soon

me:
And it's disappointing because I've watched YouTube my whole life since 2010/11. Now all I do is archive and download things I watch, but it just isn't the same.
If you want a fresh start, get on Odysee or PeerTube.

Kirby:
Mind sending me a link to a censored video by the way? I'd like to see this thing in action

(My comment: @kirbyV2 Unfortunately I couldn't find a video to test this on, but I attached the screenshot from an article somewhere.)

@matthew from RetroEdge.Tech:
Thanks for mentioning yt-dlp, as youtube-dl had stopped working for me.

After I saw your post, I installed yt-dlp on #LinuxMint (surprisingly it was in the repositories, so "apt install yt-dlp" worked fine).

Happily archived a Lua programming tutorial already.

Much appreciated!

me:
Don't forget that if you want the latest official version (like I have, I don't trust the package manager), go here: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/#using-the-release-binary
And follow the instructions to install yt-dlp without a package manager.
To update, type 'sudo yt-dlp -U' into the terminal.
P.S. Invidious links (such as yewtu.be) work with yt-dlp (and probably plain youtube-dl too) as well.
By the way, I'm curious, do you have the link for that Lua tutorial please?

ua Tutorial: https://inv.dembased.xyz/watch?v=1srFmjt1Ib0

"yt-dlp -f 22" gets the 720p version with audio

I plan to go through the whole thing, but am about half hour in right now. It takes me a lot longer to get through programming stuff due to work and family time constraints. So if you do it, you'll probably finish before I do. Even though the video is just over three hours long, it would probably take about a week to complete with doing the exercises and understanding it.

Let me know if you do.

me:
I probably won't go through the whole video (btw thanks for the video) but I have suggestions on how you can get better downloads with yt-dlp:
Use `yt-dlp -F` to see what video and audio formats are available for downloading a video, then download the combined video and audio with something like `yt-dlp -f 248+251`, and they'll be merged in ffmpeg.

matthew:
Excellent. That is just what I was looking for. I'll give that a try.

blackmore:
You can also watch online on invidious instances if you don’t want to download: https://github.com/iv-org/documentation/blob/master/Invidious-Instances.md

@PublicLewdness:
Hopefully this gets more people looking at alternatives like Peertube or LBRY.

@sjb:
There seems to be some insight in Hot_Ethanol's post here: https://teddit.net/r/assholedesign/comments/sim12o/comment/hvat6uq/

Iska:
remember when youtube fucked our tutorial searching experience to "protect small creators"?

me:
I will never forget that day. That's the day I lost all faith in YouTube and now I will treat it as secondary when uploading videos.

@ThiccGuy69:
that's seriously screwed up

Attached is the screenshot I used for my post. It says:

@charlie_root @dcc Who’s macky and tactifool?

I know many from #DistroToot, as well as those from other instances that I no longer talk to. #DistroTootRefugee #RIPDistroToot

mastodon.cloud has just been updated to v4.1.0, but all the #DistroToot posts are still preserved:
@james

Also Starnix happened to prune old remote posts, so here's my old account there:

Some songs I think go well with the end of #DistroToot, as well as the ending of my adventure on #Starnix. #music #DistroTootRefugee

I could have also used this account before the announcement of #DistroToot shutting down. But I was so used to Mastodon as well as the local timeline that I stuck to DistroToot. It was only after the announcement of the shutdown that I began using this account. And by not using DistroToot anymore and keeping all my interactions on this account, I have my DMs archived, even with DistroToot users.

The time for my instance has come then. Now I wait for the Second Coming. #DistroTootRefugee
Knowing what I know now, but didn't back on 2022-02-08 when distrotoot.com shut down, I probably would've handled the shutdown differently. So here's how I would've handled it:

First I would've pointed users to this account, grabbed an archive, and set my bio details to point to this account.

This would become my primary account to follow people and talk to users on. #DistroToot would've become my exclusive home to talk to promote messages on the local timeline asking users to follow the new account, or wait for details about the new instance.

On 02-13, when mstdn.starnix.network launched as DistroToot's successor, I would've promoted the account on DistroToot and then waited to migrate my account. I did put up a redirect notice, but not a full account migration since it didn't work. However, it did work for others, so I probably could've done it, maybe on 02-14.

Then I could've grabbed one final archive on 02-15, but I forgot to do it and DistroToot finally shut down on 02-16. All my old posts are archived on other instances, especially the posts lost between 1/28 and 2/8 of 2022.

It's just that the DistroToot shutdown was unexpected, and I finally had a use case for this instance for a bit, but after #Starnix launched I didn't really need this instance anymore and I got to use Mastodon again. #DistroTootRefugee
I am proud to have started my own instance while #DistroToot was still around, before #starnix even launched. SSV did have danksquad.org/xyz at the time, and a few others also ran their own instances. Then I got in and hosted my own. But it didn't have any use until DistroToot announced its shutdown. Since then my usage of this instance kicked off. #DistroTootRefugee

Hey, my #DistroToot account is partially archived here! It still isn't as big as on mastodon.cloud, fosstodon or SDF. @james
