Not a mockup or a joke. YouTube is now censoring videos that it deems "popular" compared to the subscriber count or creator history. This is hurting mainly small creators, and is being done to censor the #TruckerConvoy. If you get this error on your video, try downloading it with yt-dlp, a fork of youtube-dl.
@kirby:
I think YouTubes gravestone is coming soon
me:
And it's disappointing because I've watched YouTube my whole life since 2010/11. Now all I do is archive and download things I watch, but it just isn't the same.
If you want a fresh start, get on Odysee or PeerTube.
Kirby:
Mind sending me a link to a censored video by the way? I'd like to see this thing in action
(My comment: @kirbyV2 Unfortunately I couldn't find a video to test this on, but I attached the screenshot from an article somewhere.)
@matthew from RetroEdge.Tech:
Thanks for mentioning yt-dlp, as youtube-dl had stopped working for me.
After I saw your post, I installed yt-dlp on #LinuxMint (surprisingly it was in the repositories, so "apt install yt-dlp" worked fine).
Happily archived a Lua programming tutorial already.
Much appreciated!
me:
Don't forget that if you want the latest official version (like I have, I don't trust the package manager), go here: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/#using-the-release-binary
And follow the instructions to install yt-dlp without a package manager.
To update, type 'sudo yt-dlp -U' into the terminal.
P.S. Invidious links (such as yewtu.be) work with yt-dlp (and probably plain youtube-dl too) as well.
By the way, I'm curious, do you have the link for that Lua tutorial please?

"yt-dlp -f 22" gets the 720p version with audio
I plan to go through the whole thing, but am about half hour in right now. It takes me a lot longer to get through programming stuff due to work and family time constraints. So if you do it, you'll probably finish before I do. Even though the video is just over three hours long, it would probably take about a week to complete with doing the exercises and understanding it.
Let me know if you do.
me:
I probably won't go through the whole video (btw thanks for the video) but I have suggestions on how you can get better downloads with yt-dlp:
Use `yt-dlp -F` to see what video and audio formats are available for downloading a video, then download the combined video and audio with something like `yt-dlp -f 248+251`, and they'll be merged in ffmpeg.
matthew:
Excellent. That is just what I was looking for. I'll give that a try.

You can also watch online on invidious instances if you don’t want to download: https://github.com/iv-org/documentation/blob/master/Invidious-Instances.md
@PublicLewdness:
Hopefully this gets more people looking at alternatives like Peertube or LBRY.

remember when youtube fucked our tutorial searching experience to "protect small creators"?
me:
I will never forget that day. That's the day I lost all faith in YouTube and now I will treat it as secondary when uploading videos.
@ThiccGuy69:
that's seriously screwed up
