Legend has it that Solar's scales are black except the surface facing outward and are packed so tightly together that you usually aren't able to see in-between. The usual wear and tear from space junk occasionally reveals a bit of the dark part, appearing as birds against the sky when viewed from far away.

As for Lunar, well, Lunar's scales just do that, I guess.
