I finished reading Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver the other day. It's an utterly brilliant retelling and resetting of Dickens’s David Copperfield, this time set in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia at the turn of the 21st century. Just as Dickens did with the 'dark satanic mills' of Victorian England, Kingsolver manages to give all the characters a real life while skewering the evils of American capitalism, especially the mining and pharmaceutical companies, and how they have destroyed the lives of so many. They stripped the land and people's livelihoods, and then foisted OxyContin on them, wrecking their lives and their communities. It's the type of novel that stays with you for a long time afterwards. Highly recommended.

So, I just finished reading DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver. It was utterly unputdownable, I got mad at my family for speaking to me while I was reading it, and when I read the final sentence and closed the book all I could say was "DAMN."

Highly recommend, y'all. HIGHEST OF HIGHLY.

Barbara Kingsolverin Myrkkypuun siemen on yksi lempikirjoistani, ja tämä uusi Demon Copperhead oli kyllä todella upea teos myös! Kingsolverilla on mahtava kyky saattaa lukijan tietoon valtavasti tärkeää, syvällistä, ylisukupolvista tietoa mukaansatempaavaan tarinaan kieputettuna niin, että sitä oppii ja oivaltaa hurjasti ilman että edes huomaa. Ihailen hänen taustatutkimus- ja kirjoitustaitojaan tosi paljon!

Demon Copperhead on yhden kurjissa oloissa varttuvan pojan sydäntäsärkevä tarina, mutta myös katsaus itäisten Yhdysvaltojen historiaan ja olosuhteisiin. Juuri tällaisia romaaneja toivoisin esimerkiksi Suomen isoimpien hallituspuolueiden jäsenten lukevan: köyhät, työttömät ja huumeriippuvaiset eivät ole itse huvikseen valinneet vaikeuksiaan. Vähäosaisuus erittäin harvoin on ihmisen omaa syytä. Demon Copperheadissa syyllisiksi paljastuvat jo historian hiilikaivosten perustajat, häikäilemättömät kapitalistit, ja myöhemmin tuhoavan vaarallisia opioideja ihmisille huolettomina jakelevat lääkeyhtiöiden edustajat. Miten syvällisesti ja kokonaisvaltaisesti Kingsolver asioita osaakaan tarkastella! Mutta eniten lukija keskittyy seuraamaan sydän kurkussa Demon-pojan tarinaa. Voiko tästä kaikesta selvitä?

Ainoa harmituksen aiheeni on muilta osin onnistuneessa suomennoksessa käytetty sinä-passiivi. Puhekielisyys tavoitetaan kyllä muutenkin. Mutta upea kirja!

I'm reading "Demon Copperhead" and it's heavy stuff, particularly after having read "Empire of Pain".

It's being way, way more emotionally taxing than other famously upsetting books, like "A Little Life".

Reading this book feels like watching a car accident and not being able to close your eyes. I can't stop reading, though it hurts.
