This defrag tool just defragged my 200GB file with 3 fragments into 4.

WTF?!? are you shitting me? You had one job.

A little bit of defrag ASMR for the night. Needs more fragmentation though!

Idle Defragmenter 95 on Steam

Idle Defragmenter 95 is a relaxing idle desktop toy inspired by 90s defrag utilities. Run it as an overlay or window, watch sectors organize automatically, and unlock DOS / 95 / XP eras and upgrades while you work or play.

Name something more zen than watching the blocks shift around when you #defrag your NTFS hard disk?

You remember how the #MSDOS FAT file system would get fragmented easily and need to #defrag all the time?

I'm vaguely under the impression that #Linux 's implementation of FAT is cleverer at allocating space and will avoid letting files get fragmented in the first place.

That's neat how an old file system can be improved without changing the on-disk format at all, just implementing it better.

This balancing process is overzealous and doesn’t want to complete:

$ sudo btrfs balance status /
Balance on '/' is running
8954 out of about 5010 chunks balanced (35977 considered), -79% left

#btrfs #defrag

A brief history of defragging

As Mac hard disks grew larger, fragmentation of file data, file system metadata and free space slowed the disk down. Here’s how we used to solve that.
