Ah yes, nothing screams modern relevance like a stroll down memory lane with a 70s tech pipe dream 🚀. Our esteemed author dusts off the UCSD p-System and attempts to summon nostalgic giggles about #bytecode while the rest of us wonder if they lost a bet with their Commodore 64 😂. Cross-platform compatibility: still as elusive as Bigfoot.👾

A Blast From The Past

The UCSD p-System, Apple Pascal, and a dream of cross-platform compatibility never quite realized I’ve been thinking about the UCSD P-System a lot lately, and I thought I’d write about …

5/ I use brass polish to clean a lot of faceplates, mostly because I once lived in an apartment with all brass door hardware, still have the polish, and one day decided to give it a go.
I’m sure there’s a better thing to use, and someone may tell me why using it is a terrible terrible thing, but it’s doing a heck of a job getting decades of cigarette smoke off the face of this thing, even on translucent plastic.

Did anyone have a CD audio player back in the day that featured CD+G video output?

I got my first CD player in 1985, a Pioneer PD-5010 which had CD+G output, but I never had the cable and didn't have the tech sense to search for it beyond just the local Circuit City.

I never saw the visuals. 😠

Oh wow, a riveting YouTube tutorial on tethering your ancient IBM 3151 terminal to a mainframe—because apparently, it’s 1985 and we all still wear shoulder pads and leg warmers. 🤦‍♂️ Just what the world needs in 2025: a video more outdated than your grandma's dial-up. 📼💾

Look what arrived!

An original, sealed box release of #SuSE #Linux 8.1 Professional, from the year 2002!

I grabbed it off of eBay for a small price and it arrived quickly.

My plan is to take my 2001 laptop, the Fujitsu #Lifebook E6550, and without using the internet and just by consulting the manual and disks in the box, set up an authentic contemporary Linux system.

... as an #LGR-style video for #PeerTube!
