Even better would be to make including alt text the default rather than an opt-in option requiring a click.

Having alt text as the default option — add an image and the alt text entry box is open with the cursor in it — finesse 3 problems:

1. Not knowing about alt text
2. Not knowing how to add it
3. Not remembering to add it

I really wish adding alt text would be made the (software) default.

@motoridersd That is good. I do wish, though, that adding alt-text would be the *default* rather than an option requiring that the user:

1. Know about alt-text
2. Know how to add it
3. Remember to add it

Making alt-text opt-out instead of opt-in would solve all three problems.

I think the design should eliminate 3 barriers: When the person adding the image:
1. does not know about alt text at all (add link to informative guide);
2. does not know where to enter alt text
3. forgets to enter it.

Automatically opening the alt text entry box with the cursor in it overcomes 2 & 3, and for 1, have this instruction: "Enter alt text if needed — see https://axesslab.com/alt-texts/"

This would be a big help.
