My Encounters with #MBARI and #FluidDynamics

PART 2 – #DeepPIV on Opaque Animals

After the talk, I got off the phone with my boyfriend and went on that walk with my friend. Later, I read some articles on @kakanikatija. The one I remember most from that time was one where she described the training she went through to be able to perform a TED Talk. (1/4)

PART 1 -#DeepPIV on Transparent Animals & Transparent Structures Made by Animals

It was in this bathroom on June 9, 2020 where I remotely attended @kakanikatija’s ‘Mysteries of the Deep’ YouTube Live talk. I was still in grad school and my laptop was stationed on top of the toilet, ready to stream because my landlord had kindly shared her internet with me, and this was THE location with the best wifi connection in my apartment. @sennoma And here's a 3D reconstruction of the whole thing using some technology we've developed called #DeepPIV. https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/deeppiv-3dr-bathochordaeus-stygius-larvacean-19e003bed0b94fc39b787f4d5fcae773

Animated three-dimensional reconstruction (3DR) of a giant larvacean (Bathochordaeus stygius) found in Monterey Bay, CA, USA (lat 36.7015, long -122.0538) at a depth of 230 meters during a 2015 MBARI Midwater Ecology and Bioinspiration Lab cruise. A new study published in the journal Nature describes a laser-based system for constructing 3D models of gelatinous animals and the diaphanous mucus structures they secrete. The 3DR model was created by using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Rachel Carson mounted to ROV MiniROV. The animated model was made in collaboration with the Digital Life Project at UMass Amherst. More data products from the Bioinspiration Lab, including the raw video data associated with this video, can be found here. - DeepPIV 3DR – Bathochordaeus stygius larvacean - Download Free 3D model by MBARI
