As #NetZeroBuildingsWeek draws to a close, I'm envisioning the #BuiltEnvironment of the future.

That means buildings, transportation systems, and other infrastructure working together to support healthy, thriving communities.

Life can and should get better as we #Decarb4Good.

Here are six ideas to upgrade our habitat while respecting the planet:

3) That green infrastructure is essential in flood-prone areas and protects our buildings and roads while benefiting our communities

Local construction firms can help us #Decarb4Good with solutions that are uniquely suited to their city.

Drawdown’s Neighborhood presented by @ProjectDrawdown

The Drawdown's Neighborhood video series features individuals across America who are implementing solutions to the climate crisis.

Project Drawdown

1) Operational emissions: These emissions occur because of what we’re doing to keep the building going–often using electricity and fossil gas to provide space cooling or heating, ventilation, lighting, hot water, etc.

Good news on operational emissions: The electric sector is working to #Decarb4Good, too! Electricity is getting cleaner around the world, and fast. (Fossil fuels are not.)

Careful monitoring and management of a building’s energy use can help: https://drawdown.org/solutions/building-automation-systems

Building Automation Systems @ProjectDrawdown #ClimateSolutions

These systems can control heating, cooling, lighting, and appliances in commercial buildings. They cut emissions by maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing waste.

Blair says about #NetZero leadership: “Why not Georgia?”

Do you know which climate solutions are best suited for your location? Why not your state, province, or region?

The Drawdown Georgia GHG Emissions Tracker provides greenhouse gas emissions data at the state- and county-level for Georgia.

2) Why a research-based approach to recommending climate solutions, and a multi-leader movement to implement them, is Drawdown Georgia’s approach to #Decarb4Good.

3) That knowing your state’s emissions sources and sinks, along with the unique resources that are present there, supports local climate-concerned communities in working together towards a common goal.

Project Drawdown classifies emissions as occurring in the buildings sector if they are emitted right at the building site.

But I want to be clear that buildings have a much larger role to play in our journey to global net zero because what we do in buildings actually affects emissions in every sector.

Look at the building you’re in or closest to right now. Can you see something physical that makes you think of emissions happening somewhere else?

Heat pumps are #Decarb4Good rock stars because they deliver on energy efficiency and electrification. They can heat & cool your home, and they’re HOT right now--sales overtook fossil gas units in many places around the world last year.

Meet climate solutions superhero Erica Cochran Hameen, an architect and professor who makes buildings more energy efficient and healthy with retrofits: https://drawdown.org/programs/drawdown-stories/neighborhood/erica-cochran-hameen

In this story from Drawdown’s Neighborhood: Pittsburgh, she teaches us:

1) How school buildings impact the quality of life and educational opportunities of students they serve

2) Why climate change, sustainable design, and inequality are linked and we can’t #Decarb4Good without caring about equity

2) Accessing equipment becomes much more difficult after the building is constructed & occupied.

3) Successful retrofits and major system upgrades require an understanding of how the building’s systems are currently functioning AND how they will function after changes are made.

But architect and retrofit advocate Carl Elefante tells us “The greenest building is…one that is already built.”

Existing buildings are our biggest opportunity to #Decarb4Good in this sector.

Still not sure what to make of #NetZero or whether it’s useful for your building?

Here's my perspective on why the concept is important and how it should point us toward the bigger picture of caring for our planet: https://drawdown.org/news/insights/net-zero-is-bigger-than-any-one-building-but-every-building-can-help-us-get-there

Net Zero is bigger than any one building, but every building can help us get there | Project Drawdown

Instead of making every individual building net zero, we should focus on how we can use the buildings sector more broadly to achieve deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.
