We collaborate with our collegial nonprofit Gigafact to create Fact Briefs on matters of #ClimateChange and #ClimateScience. Gigafact's specific mission is to help journalists supply condensed, easy-to-apply #debunkings of common (and usually intentionally fostered) misunderstandings of how Earth's climate functions, and how we're changing that.

But we all run into #ClimateBunk, and these treatments are a handy place to point folks to better information.

Recent releases:

* Has Arctic sea ice recovered?
* Is global warming actually happening?
* Are surface temperature records reliable?
* Is the greenhouse effect still debated among climate scientists?

These are all settled questions, many of which Skeptical Science has addressed more than a decade ago-- but Gigafact chooses topics based on fresh information and although it may beggar belief they're still "current" in the public mind.

Surprisingly positive findings:

"Solar panels generate energy even in cloudy or cold conditions (Ramli et al. 2016). Although cloudy weather may reduce power generation by as much as 45%, substantial energy can still be generated during those conditions (Ramli et al. 2016 and Makrides et al. 2012)."

From our collaboratively adapted collection of #ClimateSolutionsMyths #debunkings, authored at the #SabinCenterForClimateChangeLaw.

Do solar panels work in cold or cloudy climates?

Solar panels generate energy even in cloudy or cold conditions, with cold temperatures actually increasing solar panel efficiency by increasing voltage.

Here's our latest roundup of news and analysis related to climate change, links to 23 articles from a plethora of publishers in the popular press, conveniently assembled and categorized-- for highly efficient "do keep up!"

As usual, we seek out well-reported #debunkings of #ClimateChangeMyths and #ClimateSolutionsMyths. See categories "Public Misunderstandings about Climate Science" and "Public Misunderstandings about Climate Solutions."

Article suggestions welcome!

2025 SkS Weekly Climate Change & Global Warming News Roundup #02

A listing of 23 news and opinion articles we found interesting and shared on social media during the past week: Sun, January 5, 2025 thru Sat, January 11, 2025. This week's roundup is again published soleley by category. We are still interested in feedback to hone the categorization, so if you spot any clear misses and/or have suggestions for additional categories, please let us know in the comments. Thanks!

We collaborated with the #SabinCenterForClimateChangeLaw to adapt their excellent rebuttals to 33 #RenewableEnergyMyths for easy granular access outside of the original single report, which was published as a PDF.

Commencing Nov. 5 we've been highlighting one of these #FossilFuelPropaganda #Debunkings per week. Here's the last for 2024. Stay tuned for more in 2025!

Will solar development destroy jobs?

Solar development creates more jobs per unit of energy generated than other types of energy production, and renewable jobs will far exceed the jobs lost due to a shift away from fossil fuels.

Due to circumstances beyond our control we're running a little behind here on Mastodon.

On November 13 we commemorated a pleasing accomplishment: completion of 20 fact briefs in cooperation with #Gigafact, a non-profit pursuing the singular purpose of equipping journalists with turnkey #debunkings of common misinformation and disinformation.

We help Gigafact with matters of climate change, often tricky due to the brevity of these drop-in treatments.

20 fact briefs published in collaboration with Gigafact!

In April 2024 we announced the (renewed) collaboration between Gigafact and Skeptical Science to create fact briefs, short but credibly sourced summaries that offer “yes/no” answers in response to claims found online. Our initial plan had been to publish one fact brief per week on Saturdays but - as happens with many good plans - this turned out to be a somewhat too ambitious target for the project. We therefore took it more solwly and while we sometimes managed to publish a fact brief on consecutive Saturdays, the production rate turned out to be one fact brief every other week on average. Regardless of that, we published fact brief #20 on November 9 and thought that this little milestone might make for a good reason to write a short blog post about this project.
