Alright, True Believers, for #FunADay, I've decided to make a hardcore punk mixtape, one day at a time, and load the tracks to a CryptDrive that I'll share with you all.

As is my habit and god given right, I have to kick it off with a #Day0 entry to establish a baseline, as well as to make my life harder, natch. Truth be had, I also just felt like the first three tracks I chose were cheating, as they're a go to threefer, the flow established, the nastiness a comforting sludge I return to again and again and again. And I'll lastly admit, it feels somewhat cheap to me to go 3/3 opening tracks for Day 0, but maybe we should blame the bands in question for front-loading so hard. Anyways:

1. Modern Warfare - Delivered (1980) - I originally wrote this band off, as this now iconic record cover adorned the chest of one too many tattered tees of one too many KC butt punks whose opinions I did not trust. As it turns out, they were right and I was wrong and also stupid.

Totally disjointed, art damaged west coast punk, evolving from their more straightforward KBD start as the Moderns (Feral Kid or one of Biff's imprints reissued their 7", and it's well worth the listen.) Both of Modern Warfare's 7"s stand the test of time, with the Modern Warfare #2 being a bit more aggressive (and boasting the same artwork as Antidote's Thou Shalt Not Kill), but the opener from their debut is such a perfect entry point for what's to come.

2. Mizz Nobody - Smittad (1978) - Killer, almost anachronistic cut from these Swedes. The singer sounds furious, barely hanging on, (and if the liner notes from Bloodstains Across Sweden are to be believed, something sexual was afoot during recording), the guitars boast some unhinged delay effect, the bass grooves. To my knowledge, they only ever recorded one 7", and the singer went on to do some post-punk/goth projects that would not appeal, but they earned their place in the Hardcore Punk canon with this track alone.

3. The Eat - Communist Radio (1979) - While I don't think these Floridians successfully followed-up their first single with "God Punishes..." (and I didn't explore beyond it due to the disappointment), Communist Radio b/w Catholic Love is just perfect, catchy punk: half dumb/half clever, with great hooks that linger long after the minute run time is over.

I'll end Day 0 with a stanza that has stuck with me since the first time I heard this rekkid.

"I got friends down in Costa Rica
See guerilla wanna rock 'n' roll
I got a friend or two in Tanzania
Communist radio"
