I love media about drag queens. There's a new offering on Netflix called Dancing Queens, from Sweden. So of course I watched it, putting off another episode of The Strain to do so.

It wasn't as good or heartwarming as other drag movies. It revolved around a cis woman rather than the queens themselves. They were background to her. Vehicles for her plot. I didn't like that very much.

The thing that bothered me most about it was the way they were acting like hyper queens aren't a thing. She was lying about being a man to dance with the background queens in a drag club. I was doing male and female drag in the 90s. Not really as a performer, but to go out on the town with queens I knew to have fun. Hyper queens aren't new. They've gradually become more accepted over the years. I can't see Stockholm being that far behind the times that a woman would have to pretend to be a man in order to perform at a drag club in what appeared to be a major Swedish city.

Looking up the writers and director on IMDB it appears they are both cis women which probably explains why this movie doesn't center the drag queens at all.

It's not in the same league as La Cage Aux Folles, or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, or any of the better drag films.

it was entertaining enough but the soul felt off to me. So I consider it more of a palate cleanser for The Strain, rather than something I'd really recommend as a great film.
