My most recent painting was done as a homework assignment for my class with Gary Tucker. He asked us to do scenes with rocks and water, so I had to confess that this scene has no water! The original photo from Alaska had lots of details in the rocks but Gary handles large rock surfaces oftentimes by painting them as one hue, and then he paints layers of color and/or lines to add definition, texture, shadows, and crevices.
