Our fun packed weekend with family and friends

I feel so elevated when plans come together and the sunshine helps create more special moments for our memories.

Earlier in the week I make a few plans. Sometimes when the weather’s unpredictable I have to make a few extra plans just in case. I think about where we’ll go, what we’ll eat and ensure there’s plenty of flexibility in case you fancied something different.

A few days ago I caught up with James for lunch. We spoke about our families of course. Violet’s growing and another bubba is due to arrive next month! It’s an exciting time for them that I’m very jealous of. As we had both lived in various parts of the Big city we knew about the kids museum in Linconstone – when we were younger I don’t think either of us had much interest to be honest! A few years ago they refurbished the building as the Kids Palace and I’ve wanted to take you there for a while but couldn’t quite make it work with our limited time. I told James I’d most likely take you there on the weekend as I’d have more time and the journey wasn’t too far. He said he would also be interested in visiting as he hasn’t taken Violet yet.

Our Saturday with family

I went to collect you at 10am from River Town, the weather was still chilly in the morning so I had my jacket, but also wore my old trainers and shorts so I could get down to the ground and play with you depending on what we got up to.

I had you in one hand, a buggy in the other plus a backpack bursting with your potty and your overnight bag. We zigzagged through people arriving for their day out in River Town until we got to the platform. I’d already travelled around an hour and a half and would be doing it again but with my beautiful girl. The journey is a little boring but a sticker book and things to draw plus snacks seems to be enough to fill the time. I love chatting to you. When we’re on the train everyone looks with a big smile at how cute you are.

Once in the Big City we got the train to Lakefield Square where we could go to the playground next to the Asian restaurant. You understandably didn’t want to go back on a train after being on one for over an hour, but this is as minimal as I could make it.

Even though it was cloudy, it was getting really hot so I put on a little suncream while you played. Just before lunch your uncle arrived and we went to eat Asian for lunch. We washed our hands and you enjoyed playing with the hand dryer. You’re no longer scared of the loud noise they make. I still remember our first day out to the Classic Museum where you cried at the noise of hand dryers in the bathroom.

Splashing around!

After lunch, your grandma let us know she was on her way so I planned for us to walk to the town hall where the fountains would be busy with kids playing in the sun. The distance would be ideal for you to rest and I could loop around until you woke up recharged for the water fountains.

After looping up and down Green Place you woke up and I took you down towards the cafe where we could enjoy ice creams before playtime. Your uncle got you a lime Calippo, the first ice cream I’ve ever given you. I had a Magnum.

You asked about soft play, cleverly recognising it was behind Peace Centre at the sports centre. I hope you also remembered I kept my promise to bring you back to the fountains a little while back when we crossed them.

I undressed you down to your knickers and put on lots of suncream, then released you into the jets of water like a baby hippo. You squealed and ran around as happy as all the other kids chasing each other and loving the cool water in the hot weather.

As my thanks for giving you the food container to play with in the water, you tried to splash me. I can’t believe you’ve grown so much you’re even playing tricks on me!

Back at home

After a long time playing and with the weather staying relentlessly hot, I thought it would be good to head back home for your grandma and uncle to have a coffee before heading back to their homes.

I wrapped you in my travel towel and jacket for the quick bus ride home which was also busy with families making their way around the neighbourhood.

Once at home you didn’t hesitate to do your own thing. I’m so happy our home and its surroundings are being kept in your memories, I want you to be as happy with me at your Big City home as anywhere else.

We walked your uncle and grandma to the station to say goodbye. I still wish you could have shared many more days out with them but it’s been so tricky given the situation. Our time today was lovely and a great memory.

Home for the rest of the day

We returned home where of course you asked to go to the playground near home. I told you we should head back for dinner and we would be able to go back another time. Your lovely self was so understanding and cooperative that you didn’t cause any fuss.

Dinner was your choice of cheesy pasta with turkey bacon. I had a few options available but given you said your preference, we went with that.

After dinner and a little play, I organised the bath for even more time splashing around. You asked me to join you which I should’ve, but I didn’t as I wanted to have a proper shower and get the day’s sweat and suncream off. I wonder where you get your love of water from and where that will take you.

Bedtime went well. I had a few new books from the library including Have You Heard by Hannah Dale. Something about the book and that moment gave me a huge sense of happiness. Having you at home by my side reading bedtime stories is the most perfect moment I know.

Sunday funday

Overnight you became a little unsettled and woke up to go to the loo. The bright lights of the bathroom and warm temperature made it tricky for you to go back to sleep. Maybe also the nightlight is too bright so I turned it off and got into bed with you. There’s plenty of space for us and we soon fell asleep together. This was the first time we slept in the same bed and I hope we will snooze many more times in the future when on adventures around the world.

For breakfast, I’ve decided our new tradition will be crepes. Time with daddy should be a treat both in terms of our interaction and food!

James messaged me about the day ahead as he’d been up since very early with Violet. I got us ready and we headed over to meet them at Kids Palace. The weather was sadly nothing like the day before and instead the drizzle encouraged us to get to the museum for fun and shelter.

Cultural time at the museum

When I saw the inside of the building I was amazed at what a beautiful space it is, it seems like a paradise made for children with a cafe in the middle to top up parents with coffee and little ones with snacks.

James and Violet were having an early lunch so we joined them. I had a coffee and you got reacquainted with them, it’s been a while since we were all together.

Hanging out with mates

You and Violet get on really well. Last time you were together neither of you were properly walking, this time you ran around crashing into each other, bursting with joy and laughter. It was a very touching moment and I was so appreciative of James and Violet making the long journey.

Racing with Violet

It’s hard to get my head around how only a few years ago James and I were going to parties around the same neighbourhood and now we’re more excited about giving our little ones a fun day out!

After the museum I suggested we visit Cafe Universal, another spot that not so long ago would be where me and friends would get brunch after swimming nearby. It’s one of my favourite lunch spots.

Happy dads, happy daughters

After such an energetic time, you both needed a rest. We said goodbye, then I started to walk in the direction of home to give you a chance to sleep, which you did. After quite a long time walking, I reached Longtree. The timing was perfect and the train would only be a few stops until we reached Christopher’s station which is a brief walk to Stoneydown playground.

Having you overnight is the only bit of joy I have out of this situation. Our time doesn’t feel so interrupted and we can just have fun and do things at our pace. You could have as much time as you wanted to play and we could still make it home without having to rush to have tea.

Back at home for tea

On the way home I picked up some salmon and a few other bits to make us one of my favourite meals and use the air fryer to make tasty sweet potato fries.

Our last moments were a nice family meal with Olivia where you ate really well. I think that as I’ve been cooking this for you since you were little your taste buds are accustomed to it.

Handover

For the first time, your mum sent me a message asking for me to take you downstairs. A much better approach that doesn’t abruptly end our time when she buzzes early.

I told you to say goodbye to Olivia and just before entering the lift I remembered the book you included in your day bag so I rushed back to get it. On the way down the usual sadness felt different. It’s so horrible thinking about how doing something regularly no matter how sad can become normal.

It’s hard to find comfort in this moment, the cruelty of your mum not letting me have you any more than the court order is evil to the core.

I give you kisses and seconds later the lift opens where you walk back to meet your mum.

With unbelievable predictability she finds something negative to say so she complains about your knickers, I explained that I wash them overnight. I’m not sure why but she struggles to understand so I calmly explain you have the same knickers but they’ve been washed.

That’s where our time ends. A bitter conversation about your knickers because she can’t find anything else to create problems about.

If you feel uncomfortable at handovers in the future this is your mum’s fault, this nonsense makes what is really hard even harder.
