Plaid Cymru Government in Cardiff Sets Out Plans for Expanded Welsh Powers

Following the 2026 Senedd election, Plaid Cymru has emerged as the largest party and is forming the next Welsh government, marking the first administration not led by Welsh Labour since devolution began 27 years ago. The party has outlined its priorities in a 'first 100 days' programme, emphasising the need for a new devolution bill to grant Wales powers comparable to those of Scotland, alongside revised funding arrangements. Plaid's manifesto also calls for increased control over taxation, policing, justice, welfare, broadcasting, renewable energy, migration, and the Crown Estate. Although the party downplayed its independence ambitions during the election to broaden appeal, it now plans to establish a national commission to explore the prospects of Welsh independence. Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has indicated intentions to 'take the fight' to Westminster, seeking a reset in relations and a stronger legal footing for intergovernmental structures, including the Sewel convention. The party’s victory may also encourage closer cooperation among the devolved governments of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, particularly on issues relating to the UK’s EU relations. While some proposals may not be immediate priorities for the UK government, ignoring them could fuel perceptions of Welsh marginalisation and strengthen calls for constitutional change in the longer term.
