It actually uses the nines complement method https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_of_complements to do subtraction. Sort of like deliberately rolling over an odometer.

I rarely share YT links, but thought this worthy of one. If you're a fan of niche mechanical equipment (eg #CurtaCalculator! ) this compact 35mm is one of the nicest ever made.
1966-ish? It evolved for a few yrs after that, but rings all my bells.
