Hello, Fediverse!

Sharing my new blog post: my wife wanted to print, and somehow that became a 3-day trip through Android printer discovery, mDNS/DNS-SD, IPPS, CUPS, Avahi, OpenWrt, VLANs, and ath10k firmware.

It was honestly a lot of fun.

So, my wife wanted to print...

Before this, the only reliable way to print at home was for me to upload PDFs over SFTP to my CUPS server and print them from there. This worked great, assuming you were me. My wife, quite reasonably, wanted to print like a normal person. From her device, over Wi-Fi. Without opening a ticket with the household infrastructure department. And, also quite reasonably, she has observed before that I make everything complex.

#NixOS, #CUPS, and #Firefox are not playing nice.

Last night I did a bunch of prints from firefox, no issue. Until the printer detected a paper jam.
Then firefox could not generate the print preview, just hanging trying to load the print dialogue.

After a reboot it printed fine once, but there was another jam, and again it can't load the print dialogue. Logging in again didn't fix, restarting the CUPS service didn't fix. I assume a reboot will, but that is silly.

#Printing sucks.

Not to be dramatic, but…
I really needed good coffee this morning. Used my one cup style mini French press with plunger and water from electric kettle. 2 cups are there because I’ve learned how to get 2 rich cups of coffee from the one press. #Coffee #FrenchPress #Cups

Beyond Plastics Tracked Starbucks’ ‘Widely Recyclable’ Plastic Cups. None Ended Up at a Recycling Facility. — Beyond Plastics - Working To End Single-Use Plastic Pollution

A three-month national investigation by Beyond Plastics found that not a single tracked Starbucks cold-beverage cup ended up at a recycling facility — even when the cups were placed in clearly marked recycling bins inside Starbucks stores.

Today, in order to save me maybe 10 seconds each time I do postage, I am trying to set up CUPS to print directly to my printer from the server in London.

Yes, it should be possible…

No, it is not working…

Could take a while…

[finally working, and I think within the chart time]

We have family coming this evening and I have to cook, so I can't work through the whole process, but here's the starting point:

  • Open a browser on the #Linux box
  • Type localhost:631 into the address bar and press Enter
  • If you get an error message, use your Linux distribution's package manager to install Cups and then try again

The page you now see in your browser is produced by #Cups, the Common Unix Printing System. Once you're there, work your way through the menus. You'll find a screen that shows which #printers are already installed and a screen that lets you install a new one. Once you've got one installed, Cups can send it a test page; that confirms that the physical connection is good and you have the right driver. (Choosing the right driver isn't especially easy, so you may need to resort to trial and error.)

I think Cups lets you set your chosen printer as the default, so do that.

Then try to print a few words from a word processor or Web browser.

Good luck!

It's a #cups kind of day.
