Street names are not neutral. They encode a community's answer to the question: whose history is worth remembering?

Most American city streets are named for European settlers, military figures, and land developers. The communities whose labor built those cities, whose culture shaped them: largely absent from the signage.

Street naming is a small act of power. Who holds that power, and how that has changed, is worth examining closely.
