Delve into the world of arms and armour and learn about their important role both within and beyond warfare. Discussions will centre around courtly culture and diplomacy, making and decorating, cross-cultural interactions and colonial collecting histories. Leading scholars and specialists will share their insights and latest research.

EXARC and Stadtmuseum Berlin (Team Düppel) are pleased to announce the conference “Staging the Past: Living History, Live Audiences, Real Challenges”, to be held in Berlin from 12–15 November 2026.

The conference is open to all and welcomes professionals, researchers, practitioners, and interested participants working in experimental archaeology, living history, museum practice, and related fields. Participation for audience and contributors is be possible both in person and online via the registration button.

Conference Theme

The conference explores the opportunities and challenges of presenting the past through living history and museum theatre. While living history has become an increasingly influential tool for interpretation, education, and public engagement, it also raises complex questions concerning:

• authenticity and quality
• performance and interpretation
• audience interaction
• ethical considerations
• institutional and practical constraints

Through papers, workshops, and practical sessions, the conference aims to foster critical discussion and exchange of experience across disciplines.

Cross-Post: Pylos and Sphacteria 2027

The next major ancient reenactment in Greece will take place at Gialova, New Pylos, and Sphacteria from 19 to 25 April 2027. This will focus on the Athenian and Spartan struggle to control the area during the Peloponnesian War or Archidamian War. More than a hundred members of groups from all over Europe, the USA, and Canada will attend. This part of the Peloponnese is not good for much except light grazing and summer holidays, so it is an unspoiled rural site. There will be excursions to Olympia, Ancient Pylos, and the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor and perhaps other sites.

A lot of organization happens on Facebook. But this year there is a website and an intermittent email list with links to Google Docs for organizing. Tentative discussions on topics like flying spears to the site, and splitting up the load and expense of cooking gear and water vessels, are ongoing. Discussions about experiments and rules for mock fighting will come in time.
