The #deepwaterhorizon explosion released an enormous amount of #methane into the #gulfofmexico. Estimates suggest that the blowout emitted around 250,000-500,000 tons of methane, making it one of the largest methane releases in history.

But for comparison:
- global #cattle industry emits about 80-120 million metric tons of methane per year from enteric fermentation (#CowBurps )
- in 100 years, #cows would emit 8 to 12 billion tons of methane.
