Masked Normality: Life in Cork One Year After COVID-19

A year after COVID-19 hit Irish shores and people were still being extra careful, even wearing masks outside where there was little risk of infection.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Here we are in 2026, and people are still denying that COVID-19 was a problem, while there’s a screenshot going around of a tweet by an “MD” who predicted that everyone who got the vaccine would be dead by the end of 2025. We’re still around. LOL.

Walking connects us in quiet, unspoken ways—to the soul of a place, to the rhythm of its people, to the texture of daily life. On streets like Coburg, the simple act of moving through space becomes something meaningful. #CorkIreland #Ireland #CoburgStreet

It's hard to separate that from the trip, just given the timing. Even so, we had an amazing time. St. Patrick's Day seems like a good time to finally share some photos. We spent a few days in Dublin, took the train to Cork (the O'Keefes originate in County Cork), and then back to Dublin for a couple more.

We went to Ireland in November, for my birthday, but I haven't posted about it. We left the day after Election Day and before the plane left the ground, it was clear that we were entering a dark period in U.S. history. One in which so many Americans had chosen to openly and proudly embrace bigotry.

We hit some landmarks (including St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness, Jameson, and Blarney Castle), but spent a lot of time wandering around, and enjoying all sorts of drinks and food. It was my first time in Ireland, and I loved it. I look forward to going back.
