Andean condor Vultur gryphus
Andean condor Vultur gryphus

The Andean condor Vultur gryphus is one of the largest flying #birds in the world, with a wingspan of up to 3.3 metres and a body weight of up to 15 kilograms. These amazing birds are able to soar for up to five hours and cruise for over 100 kilometres using wind currents, not flapping. They are primarily scavengers, feeding on carrion from large carcasses such as deer, cattle, and marine mammals. With a striking black plumage and distinct white ruff around their necks, they are iconic symbols of the #Andes mountains. Despite their impressive size and strength, Andean #condors are classified as #Vulnerable from human-related threats including habitat loss for #palmoil, #soy and #meat #deforestation. Farmers persecute these beautiful birds putting poison into animal carcasses. Their slow reproductive rate makes their survival even more challenging. These birds are critical for ecosystems, disposing carrion. Thus they prevent the spread of diseases. Help them to survive by simply changing your diet and buying habits. #BoycottMeat and be #vegan #Boycott4Wildlife

California Condors are nesting in northern California now! It wasn't by chance either-- tons of effort by many parties, including a small part I played in 2012 with a contaminants and disease survery study I co-led to check out other avian scavengers on the northwest coast. Anyway, awesome news! https://coastalraptors.com/2026/03/25/condors-believed-nesting-in-the-pacific-northwest-for-the-first-time-in-more-than-100-years/#comment-41533

In 2008, for the first time since the program began, more California condors were flying free in the wild than in captivity. Today there are nearly 500 โ€“ more than half of them flying free in Arizona, Utah, California, and Baja Mexico.

When I was born, there were no condors in the wild. I'm 37 now, and there are over 250 condors flying free.

In 1982 there were only 22 California Condors left in the world. In 1992, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with its public and private partners, began reintroducing captive-bred condors to the wild. In 2001 the first wild nesting occurred in Grand Canyon National Park since re-introduction. In 2002 there were only 8 pairs of wild nesting birds population-wide.
