#Manchester's filthy air.
A long way to go.

"All in all, the measures will get Greater Manchester’s air to 40.3 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide in one cubic metre of air.
"The UK legal limit is officially 40, but results under 40.4 are rounded down, making TfGM’s plan compliant.
"But the World Health Organisation’s recommended limit is just 10."

Clean air zone signs are down, but our pollution 'is like smoking 150 cigarettes a year'. Now what?

The charging clean air zone was cancelled after a spectacular U-turn in 2022 - and led to more arguments and thousands of stickers being slapped on signs. Now there's a new plan, Ethan Davies examines what it involves - and why it's only a start

He has considerable political capital, and an unwillingness to use this to press the 10 GM council leaders (or even just MCC & Salford, where air quality is worse) to introduce a charging #CleanAirZone makes him look weak.

Excellent work by Highways Magazine on the Greater Manchester #CleanAirZone - as currently configured it will have virtually no effect on GM's poor air quality. @mumsforlungs.bsky.social @walkridegm.org.uk

This is why urban areas need a combination of a #CleanAirZone to get rid of the worst polluting vehicles, and a #CongestionCharge to reduce the total, and generate money to pay for public transport and #ActiveTravel alternatives. Do our politicians have the will and leadership to act?

"After one year of the zone, nitrogen dioxide from traffic was lower, GP visits for respiratory illnesses were down by 25% and those for heart problems decreased by 24%. This added up to an average of 732 fewer visits a month, compared with pre-Covid levels, and the trend showed that benefits were increasing over time."

Several UK cities have introduced a #CleanAirZone. Cities with a CAZ fared slightly better in the 2021-2023 period (11% drop ) than those without (5% drop, excluding Sheffield as data not available). Apologies for the small sample sizes, so this analysis should be taken with a grain of salt. #AirPollution #LetPompeyBreathe https://greenpompey.org.uk/let-pompey-breathe/2024/12/19/effect-of-clean-air-zones-on-uk-cities/
