Some thoughts on design systems dogma, which I spoke about at #Clarity2022:
“The nuance, complexity and variability of the contexts that we’re building our design systems in, is infinite and ever-changing.
But dogmatism in our field is forcing us to try and solve these problems in one way - and we can’t let it.”
For my #designsystem needs: I summarized some thoughts on one of my favorite themes from #clarity2022: flexibility.
Hi DS friends! 🖤
For the past few years @[email protected] has partnered with @clarity to do a State of Design Systems survey.
We share results with the community. Example: https://material.io/blog/research-state-of-design-systems-2020
It would mean a lot to me if you filled this out!

Also, since there was no alt text on the @Clarity_conf image, allow me: The Material Design logo with ‘Partner’ above it, #Clarity2022 and clarityconf•com below it.
Folks, provide alt text for images. I mistakenly shared this one thinking the image was the link abstract. Oops.
Slowly catching up on the #Clarity2022 talks that I missed and feel so seen by Hayley Hughes’ comment that “when you work on design systems, there are people that think they know what you do, but they have no clue.”
What interests me about this is how it’s changed the our comms directive in the past few years.
We’ve gone from:
“we need to explain what a design system is”
to:
“we need to help people unlearn common misconceptions about design systems and re-educate them”
