Edward ChampionI'm pleased to report that I finally finished reading Samuel Richardson's extremely massive motherfucking novel CLARISSA today. It's the 200th book I've read in 2025. I think that you have to be more than a little insane to read it in the 21st century (especially because Lovelace is so detestable), but I am glad that I made the journey. It is a masterpiece. And no other epistolary novel will topple it.

Another marvelous phrase from CLARISSA: "That's the plain Dunstable of the matter," as in the road to Dunstable, derived from dunce. It reminds me of Dashiell Hammett's "You don't know the whole Limburger." I do love all these 18th century idioms! And I shall be doing my best I can to drop them in my patois from time to time!
I hope to use the phrase "provoking sauciness" the next time someone impugns me online. 🤣🤣
I now have this monster. If I start talking like a 19th century libertine in the next few months, well, you now know why.
