What causes an itchy skin in old age? This study using aged mice shows that elevated release of vesicular Zn2+ from TMEM163-positive neurons dampens the activity of NPY neurons, thereby triggering the disinhibition of itch-transmitting neural circuits, leading to chronic itch in aging.
