Every year on 25th June, we observe World Vitiligo Day to raise awareness about vitiligo, a rare autoimmune skin disorder causing loss of skin color in patches due to destruction of melanocytes. This day highlights the social stigma, mental challenges, and healthcare needs of those living with vitiligo.

Vitiligo affects about 1% of the global population, regardless of gender or ethnicity, mostly between ages 20-30. The day was first initiated in 2011 by VR Foundation and VITSAF to bring vitiligo into the spotlight. The chosen date honors Michael Jackson, who openly lived with vitiligo.

This yearโs focus is transforming misunderstanding and shame into confidence and acceptance. It urges support from society and healthcare providers to replace stigma with inclusion and compassionate care.
๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐:
- Cause: Autoimmune destruction of pigment cells, with genetics and other factors playing a role
- Symptoms: Whitish skin patches, premature whitening of hair, discoloration in mucous membranes and retina
- Treatment: No cure yet, but options include camouflage, repigmentation therapy, light therapy, and surgery
Let's stand together to support people with vitiligoโpromoting awareness, empathy, and research.
