Most Europeans may have had dark skin until less than 3000 years ago.

Ancient DNA from 348 individuals suggests that pale skin became the predominant characteristic of people living in Europe much later than assumed.

"Adrian Targett visited the home of a close relative yesterday. He had to put on Wellington boots because the floor is muddy. The relative was not in. Hardly surprising: he died 9,000 years ago."

Ancient 'dark-skinned' Briton Cheddar Man find may not be true

The headline was that an ancient Briton from 10,000 years ago had dark skin, but the genetics of skin colour are so complex that we can’t be sure

New Scientist

I thought it might be useful to look at Cheddar Man as it appears so often in #archaeological groups and is like catnip for the far right & white supremacists.

Cheddar man was found in Gough’s Cave, #Somerset in 1903 & dates to the #Mesolithic, some 10,000 years ago. Advances in #aDNA meant his skeleton was tested. There was also a bust being made for a TV prog, which used standard techniques to reconstruct his profile + physical features.

Thread.

There’s a family living in Cheddar that’s directly descended from him, about 9,000 years later.
